We know that some people find their zivug easily while for others it is an arduous path. Why is it this way?
There is an idea pertaining to marriage of zivug rishon and zivug sheini, first union and second union. The Arizal explains that when the soul of a man comes for the first time to this world, the soul of his future wife also comes. When these two are paired up, that is called zivug rishon because this is the first time that they are being paired. In such a case, it is not difficult to match them.
On the other hand, if the man sins and must be reincarnated then it’s a different story. The soul of his wife may also come down from heaven along with his. When they are now matched here in this world, that is called a zivug sheini. However, on such a match, there are many accusing malachim in heaven (mekatrigim), and as a result, matching them up comes along with obstacles. On this match the gemara says kashin l’zavgun ki’Krias Yam Suf, to match two people together is as difficult as splitting the Yam Suf.
