Sometimes, a husband wants to buy new clothes for his wife, however, the wife prefers that her husband replace his old bashed up hat, and she is moichel with a full heart. On the contrary, it’s a great simcha for her, that her husband walks around in respectable looking clothes. The Shu”t Mishnas Yosef (13:172) writes:רצונו של אדם זהו כבודו - “the will of a person is his (her) honour”, and on the contrary a woman wants her husband to look respectful inside and outside the house, more than she cares about herself. כדי שיהא נודע בשערים בעלה בשבתו עם זקני ארץ – in order ‘that her husband is distinctive in the councils when he sits with the elders of the land’, i.e. a woman wants her husband to walk around being respected.
