The Speech of Torah and the Unity of Israel

The style of a Yisroel saying words of Torah is as the Possuk says: תַעַן־לְשוֹנִּי אִּמְרָתֶךָ “My tongue will respond [with] Your word” akin to the Possuk: י שְפָתַי תִּפְתָח -אֲדֹנָ וּפִּי יַגִּּיד תְהִּלָתֶךָ “Hashem, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will recite Your praise” – my mouth will talk by itself!

This concept is relevant to each and every one of Yisroel, because they are each in a manner of ‘Achdus Yisroel’ like כְאִּיש אֶחָד בְלֵב אֶחָד ‘one man with one heart’ and not just ‘like’ one man with the ‘Chof Hadimyon’ but actually one man. That they are actually one entity [literally].

My tongue will respond [with] your word: This means that my tongue will repeat your word after you.

Will talk by itself: As is explained in Torah Or: Vayeitzei (67:2) Normally when the Torah tells us the word ‘Leimor’ it means to repeat over what Hashem said to Moshe to the B’nei Yisroel. But with the Aseres Hadibros Hashem spoke direct to everyone so who or what is the Leimor for? So the Alter Rebbe answers that Leimor at the Aseres Hadibros means for us to repeat ourselves and to say over the words of Torah that were already said to Moshe at Har Sinai. Because all Mikrah, Mishnah, Halochos and Agodos were all said to Moshe at Har Sinai even though in the Talmud it mentions other Tano’im and Amoro’im who said this Halocho is like Beis Shamai who says this and that etc it is all the word of Hashem and that is the Halocho that was said to Moshe at Mount Sinai but it came out of the mouth of this particular Tanna or Amorah. As the Possuk says: “My word which I have put in your mouth”. This Koach has been given to Yisroel so that: “The law that comes out of their mouths is Mamosh the word of Hashem which was said to Moshe Rabeinu on Har Sinai and was given at the time of Kabbolas HaTorah with the Aseres Hadibros to repeat that which was said already. This is a state of ‘Bittul’ to Hashem Yisboreich. That the words do not become a separate entity from Hashem when a human says them as if it was the human who is saying them from himself. But it is as the Possuk says: “My tongue will respond Your word” that the Torah is Your word. But my tongue is responding like one who repeats something after someone who told him to repeat him.

Unity of Israel

One man with one heart: There is a Possuk in Yisro (19:2) that says וַיִּחַן־שָם יִּשְרָאֵל נֶגֶד הָהָר “And the B’nei Yisroel encamped there opposite the mountain” but it is written in the singular. So rashi says there on this Possuk: כְאִּיש אֶחָד בְלֵב אֶחָד Like one man with one heart. The unity was such there that every single one of the whole of klal Yisroel all had the same intention in their heart at that time to receive the Torah. Which is why they were united as one man which is why the Torah uses the singular to describe them.

Chof Hadimyon: In the language of Loshon Hakodesh when you place the letter Chof in front of a word it changes the word to an example. So in our case the maxim is כְאִּיש אֶחָד בְלֵב אֶחָד meaning like one man with one heart, so not really one man with one heart. Whereas Chof Hahashvo’oh is a Comparative prefix, so it is real as that which you are comparing it to.

One entity: similar to my tongue being ‘Botul’ to Your Torah, so instead of speaking what I want it to speak it speaks Your Torah. Or my lips which are ‘botul’ to you to say your praise. And only that way can we experience the revelation of Matan Torah. So too, with the B’nei Yisroel. When the B’nei Yisroel are ‘Ish Echod Beleiv Echod’ that each one is self-nullified to the unity of all of Klal Yisroel to the extent that the whole of the B’nei Yisroel is one entity. Then they can experience these lofty revelations that we were privy to at Matan Torah.
