You Can Always Take Over and Outdo the People You Admire

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

The Bechor is a special person. I was once at a Levaya of an old aristocratic Sephardic family. The mother had been Niftar, and all members of this large family were sitting on the benches of the chapel, except for one dignified looking brother, who stood straight like a stick throughout the Hespeidim. I asked who that was, and they informed me that this was the Bechor of the family.

A Moroccan Yungerman was notified by a doctor that his pregnant wife was carrying a child who was not well, Rachmana Litzlan. His father-in-law was a major Novardoker Talmid of R' Gershon Zatzal, and with his Bitachon, everything turned out fine, with Hashem’s help. The Yungerman was telling me how he was crying about the situation when he came back from the doctor. He kept repeating ו זֶ ה הוּא הַ ב כוֹר שֶׁ ל י! "This is my Bechor, and it hurts much worse".

A Bechor is: נוֹטֵ ל פ י שׁ נַ י ם (he receives a double portion of his father’s inheritance) and he should be a superior person. Yet, he lost his rights by the Ma'aseh Eigel, and the Levi'im took over. This is a major Mussar Haskel. The people you admire (in Ruchaniyus, of course) may be on top of you today, but in Hashem's world of truth, you can always take over and outdo anybody if you try. Megilas Rus is the most perfect example how a lowly Moav’iya becomes: אֵ ם הַ מַ ל כוּת the matriarch of royalty.
