Rav Shimshon Pinkus zt”l (Sefer Tiferes Shimshon) asks why the blessings for gashmius mentioned in this Parshah are solely for an abundance of crops from one’s fields and vineyards. Why doesn’t the Torah promise us that we will have a lot of gold, silver, houses and possessions?
He answers that a person who has a lot of gold, silver and precious gems may come to rely on his wealth. He may think that he doesn’t need to depend on Hashem to help him, as he has enough money put away to last him for a long time, and he will always be able to buy whatever he needs.
Hashem wants to grant wealth to His people, but he doesn’t want us to fall to this erroneous mindset. Therefore, he blesses us with an abundance of fields and vineyards, as even one who has such property still needs to turn to Hashem and daven to Him for rain and good crops. Thus, such a person will have wealth but will not become estranged from Hashem.
Hashem is actually granting us a double bracha. We will be blessed with wealth and we will also be blessed with an opportunity to always be connected to Him.
Accordingly, the greatest brachos one can have are health, children, and life itself. For these things to last, one needs to turn to Hashem and ask for His help, as one cannot sustain them on his own. And when one recognizes that he constantly needs to turn to Hashem for his livelihood, his health and his family, he will constantly connect with Him, and, in this merit, he will receive more and more blessings.
