Hashem's Promise to Walk Among His People

Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh | June 27, 2025

אֵּל םֶכ ל יִתיִי הְּו םֶכְּכֹּותְּּב יִ תְּכַ לַהְּתִהְּולוק עְּל יִל ויְּהִ ת םֶ תַאְּו םי...ם

I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you will be my people.

The Gemara (Taanis 31b) says that in the future, Hashem will make a circle for the righteous people, with Hashem Himself in the center. Everyone will point with his finger and announce that זֶה אֵלִי וְאַּׁנְוֵהוּ - This is my G-d and I will beautify Him.

The reason the Torah chose the expression וְהִתְהַּׁלַּׁכְ תִי - I will walk, is that Hashem’s light will emanate from Him to provide spiritual nourishment to the souls who are sitting around Him. This is called הליכה.

The Torah continues with וְהָיִיתִי לָכֶם לֵאלוֹקים – I shall be your G-d, referring to the possuk we have just mentioned, that the Tzadikim announce that this is their G-d. It could also be referring to the other meaning of the word וְאַּׁנְוֵהוּ – and I will build a dwelling place for Him. The Tzadikim themselves are the dwelling place for the Shechina. Hashem is saying that He will dwell inside these Tzadikim, and He will be theirs.

Klal Yisroel would be Hashem’s people; they would be the closest to Hashem that anyone in the world could be.

Another explanation of these words וְהָיִיתִי לָכֶם לֵ אלוקים could be as a contrast between the future and now. Right now, the belief in Hashem in the world is based on Nevi’im. The Torah is saying that the day is coming that the entire world will recognize that Hashem is king and that He is the only one in charge of this world. They will realize this on their own, they will not need to hear anything from a Navi or any outside assistance.

However, even though the entire world will know about Hashem, וְאַּׁתֶם תִהְיוּ לִי לְעָם – Klal Yisroel will still be Hashem’s special nation. They will stay closest to Hashem, and nobody else will be closer than them, even when others are extremely close.
