We suppose this is the position he accepted that year: the Chief Rabbi Lord Jakobovits’ Chair in Modern Jewish Thought at Jews’ College. It is well to note that soon after he also became the principal of Jews' College (1984-1990).
Jews' College (founded in 1855 and later changed to the London School of Jewish Studies) is a rabbinical seminary in London focused on training and mentoring rabbis. Rabbi Sacks began teaching Jewish Philosophy at Jews' College in 1973; his position later changed to training rabbis.
