The Beit Hamikdash Shel Maala and the Trumpets of Moshe Rabbeinu

Torah Papers | June 27, 2025

Based on the Midrash, the first wall of the Beit Hamikdash Shel Maala was built by Hakadosh Baruch Hu with His camp. Then Avraham came with his camp and built the second wall, Yitzchak with his camp built the third wall, Yaakov with his camp built the fourth wall, and Moshe with his camp built the roof. The Mahar"a of Belz brought the question of his father, who asked: What does it mean “by Hakadosh Baruch Hu and His camp”? Does Hakadosh Baruch Hu need a camp or entourage to assist Him? He explained that the Kadmonin, the early sources, state the name of the building above is the numerical value of מחנ"ה, equal to the gematria of ל-א חסד. This is the meaning of Hakadosh Baruch Hu and His camp, referring to the name מחנ"ה.

The Mahar”i ztz”l then explains. Why did Avraham and Yitzchak not call it בַּיִת, but specifically used הַ ר and שָׂ דֶ ה, respectively? According to the above, each needed to add the numerical value of מחנ"ה – 103. Avraham called it הַ ר, which equals two times מחנ"ה – 206. Yitzchak needed three times מחנ"ה, so he called it שָׂ דֶ ה – 309. Yaakov then needed four times מחנ"ה, so he called it בַּיִת – 412. Moshe Rabbeinu, who built the roof, needed five times מחנ"ה, so he davened 515 Tefillot, equaling five times מחנ"ה – 515, and the same value as וָאֶ תְ חַ נַּן. The Mahar”i ztz”l added that this is why Moshe requested: וֹתָ לְ הַ רְ אוֹת אַ תָּ ה הַ חִ ל – You have begun to show me, referring to the Beit Hamikdash Shel Maala. He thus asked: אֶ עְ בְּ רָ ה־נָּא וְ אֶ רְ אֶ ה – Let me cross over and see. He wished to see the Beit Hamikdash below as well, built and perfected in its place in Yerushalayim. Thus, the 515 Tefillot were to complete the building of the roof of the Beit Hamikdash Shel Maala. And now that he davened 515 Tefillot and the Beit Hamikdash above was built and perfected, if Moshe Rabbeinu davened one more Tefillah to enter the land, Hakadosh Baruch Hu would have had to fulfill his request. Therefore, He said: אַל־תּוֹסֶף דַּבֵּר אֵלַי עוֹד בַּדָּבָר הַזֶּה רַ ב־לָך – Enough for you! Do not go on speaking to Me any more about this matter. These are his wondrous words.

What can be done, the prophecy of Eldad and Meidad foretold otherwise: Moshe dies, and Yehoshua brings Yisrael into the land. The Shemen Rosh says, since Eldad and Meidad prophesied that Moshe would die and not enter the land, he would not merit building his מחנ"ה in the Beit Hamikdash. Therefore, it is said, בַּמַּ חֲנֶהאֶ לְ דָּ ד וּ מֵ ידָ ד מִ תְ נַ בְּ אִ ים – Eldad and Meidad are prophesying in the camp, meaning, their prophecy was that Moshe would not merit building the Beit Hamikdash with his camp. In other words, Eldad and Meidad prophesied about the “roof” of the Beit Hamikdash.

If this is so, we can now return to the חֲ צוֹצְ רֹת – the trumpets. We cited the words of Meshech Chochmah that the trumpets will be revealed again in Milchemet Gog u’Magog. We also cited the Ba’al HaTurim on the Pasuk instructing that the trumpets be blown when heading out to war, where he says וְ כִ י תָּ בֹאוּ מִ לְ חָ מָ ה hints at the future war of Gog and Magog, which will come in the days of Mashiach.

Rabbotai, how will Moshiach know where the חֲצוֹצְ רֹת are? The Siftei Kohen says: מַה שֶּׁהָיָה הוּא שׁ ֶיִּהְיֶה – What was, will be, bear the same initials as משה. Just as there was a first redeemer, so will there be a final redeemer. This is what it means here. עַל פִּי ה' בְּיַד מֹשׁ ֶה – By the command of Hakadosh Baruch Hu through Moshe. In the future, he will come with Melech HaMashiach. Moshe Rabbeinu will come with Melech HaMashiach, retrieve the trumpets, and together they will go to the war of Gog and Magog. And then what will happen then? וְ נוֹשׁ ַ עְ תֶּ ם מֵ אֹיְ בֵ יכֶ ם ...וַהֲרֵ עֹתֶ ם בַּחֲצֹצְ רֹת – You shall sound the trumpets... and be delivered from your enemies!

The Drashot Beit Yishai (Siman 45) states: It is said in the Pasuk, עַד כִּי יָבֹא שִׁילֹה – Until Shiloh comes, which in gematria equals משה. The Pasuk continues with וְ לוֹ יִקְּהַת – And to him shall be the obedience, containing the letters of וְ לֵוִ י קְ הָ ת. In the sod of אַשְׁרֵ י הָעָם שׁ ֶכָּכָה לוֹ – Happy is the people whose lot is thus, שׁ ֶ כ ּ ָ כ ָ ה also equals משה. This is the essence of sounding the trumpets of Moshe Rabbeinu, which were not sounded on the day of his death. They will complete that sounding during Milchemet Gog u’Magog, when Mashiach ben Yosef will prepare the throne of Mashiach ben David, who is Moshe, and restore the crown of kingship to its owner.

May it be His will that we hear the sound of Moshe Rabbeinu’s trumpets soon, amen v’amen!
