Purity on the Road

“But the man who was ritually pure and was not on a journey...” (Numbers 9:13).

Which person can maintain holiness in the service of G-d and in Torah study with purity? One who “was not on a journey”—someone who does not travel. For on the road, it is very difficult to be meticulous about every detail and stringency.

Guarding Oneself During Journeys

This is the meaning of the verse “A constant fire shall burn upon the altar; it shall not go out” (Leviticus 6:6), and the Sages said (Jerusalem Talmud, Yoma, Ch. 4): “Even during journeys.” This is a warning that the holy fire must not be extinguished on the road, during travels, or in places lacking a good environment or positive influence.

A Mission of Divine Providence

“From the Lord a man’s steps are established, for He delights in his way.” (Tehillim 37:23)

Every person is an agent of Divine Providence, meant to bring the illumination of Torah and Divine service in the place and environment where they are found, according to the decree of Divine Providence. The choice is in human hands, and when a person chooses good, then in that person’s “way” the Holy One, blessed be He, delights.

The Ground Was Waiting

Once, the Rebbe Rashab saw two Chassidim—one named Reb Peretz and the other Reb Mendel—sitting by the roadside and reviewing a Chassidic discourse. The Rebbe said to them: This patch of earth has been waiting since the creation of the world for Peretz and Mendel to sit upon it and review words of Torah.
