The first mention of Jews in Medina, Saudi Arabia dates from the time of the First Beis Hamikdash. By the seventh century CE there was a large population of Jews in the area, who were respected by local Arabian tribes. In the year 624, the Jews of Medina were expelled.
Is there a hint to this city in the Torah?
At a meeting in 1924, Musa Kazis asked R' Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld about a holy Muslim city mentioned in the Torah. R' Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld told him that the Muslim city of Medina was mentioned in the Torah in the words ארץ קדם, the land of the east, where Targum Onkolos renders ארע מדינחא, the city of Medina.
