Dovid never points at his enemies and says: “You are the problem in my life”. Instead, he always forgives, and he only sees Hashem in them. He loves and respects Shaul, Avner, and Avshalom, who were his worst enemies; although they all hated him and wanted to kill him.
Dovid was actually the last 70 years that Adam HaRishon lost. (Zohar). The main problem with Adam HaRishon was when he blamed Chava for his sin, and said: ה א ש ה א שֶ ר נ תַ ת ה ע מ ד י It’s all Your fault, since you gave me Chava for a wife; and Rashi calls him an ingrate. R' Tzvi Hirsh of Ziditchov said that Adam would have been somewhat forgiven right away for his sin, but saying that it’s Hashem’s fault since He gave him Chava for a wife, was his true major sin.
We can suggest that this is why Dovid was so involved in forgiving his enemies. He was being: מְ תַ קֵ ן correcting the sin of Adam. When you see a human before you, and you don’t realize that he is only a Nisayon from Hashem in disguise, then you fail to understand the basic truth of your existence.
You were created to work on your Middos, and when you love your enemies without blaming them, THEN you are living with the truth. The people in your life simply don’t count; they are just tests Min HaShamayim. This is why Dovid was always: מודֶ ה admitting on all his wrong-doings, like he said: וְחַ ט את י נֶגְ ד י ת מ יד (Tehillim 51:5) my sin is before me always. “I’m always blaming myself, because then I grow in Middos”.
Unlike Shaul, who said: כ י י רֵ את י אֶ ת ה ע ם ו אֶ שְ מַ ע בְ קול ם (Shmuel I 15:24) It was the people’s fault. Shaul didn’t take responsibility for his actions. R' Wainkrantz Zatzal told me that in your life there is only you and Hashem testing you via the people in your life. This is why Dovid’s greatest accomplishment was when Shim'i ben Gera was cursing him, and Dovid said: כ י ה' א מַ ר לו קַ לֵּ ל (Shmuel II 16:10) It’s not him, it’s Hashem directing him to curse me.
This made Dovid the: גֶ רֶ ל רְ יע ב י שֶ ל מֶ ב כ רְ ה fourth Regel of the Merkava (Seforim). He grew in Savlanus (tolerance) and in seeing only Hashem, even while Shim'i threw rocks at him. This was his #1 achievement, since it was his main mission in life, i.e., not to blame; unlike Adam HaRishon who blamed, and said: ה א ש ה א שֶ ר נ תַ ת ה ע מ ד י It’s her fault.
After Adam was punished and received K'lalos (curses) from Hashem, it says that he called her name “Chava”, and he praised her, saying: כ י ה יא ה יְת ה אֵ ם כ ל ח י ג כ she is the mother of all life. We may ask, why does he name Chava right after being cursed by Hashem? We can suggest that he was doing the opposite of being ungrateful and saying: ה א ש ה א שֶ ר נ תַ ת ה ע מ ד י It’s her fault.
After all the Tzaros that his sin caused him, Adam gives the “cause” of his sin (i.e., Chava) a big boost. This is precisely Ha'tavah B'makom Hakpada; i.e., Davka doing a favor (Ha'tavah) instead of being upset (Hakpada). This is the beginning of the Derech of Dovid HaMelech. Not only is he not angry at Chava; he gives her a respectable name.
And the very next Passuk says that Hashem gave clothes to Adam and Chava. We can suggest that clothes are the “respect” of a person (Gemara). This is Midda K'neged Midda; since he respects Chava, therefore Hashem respects him.
