Every Jew Is an Officer: Individual Value and Avoiding Envy

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

שְּ תֵים עֶשְּ רֵה עֵינֹּת מַיִּם טו כז Every Single Yid Is an Official Officer Klal Yisroel came to Eilim, and waiting for them were 12 springs of water. Rashi says that this was K'neged the 12 Shevotim. Hashem showed us the special care he has for each individual Shevet. The Torah calls us: מַמ לֶכֶת כֹהֲנ ים יט ו a kingdom of Cohanim, and Rashi translates this to mean: ש ר ים princes. Every single Yid is an official officer. And the name of the mother of Klal Yisroel was Sara which means: ש ר ר ה a ruler! And she was a woman, yet she is “on top”! It sounds almost inappropriate. Who are we ruling over?

The simple Pshat could be that you are ruling over your Yetzer Hara. Also, a person needs to feel a certain responsibility for the rest of Klal Yisroel, since every Yid is precious, and every Yid (you) have unique qualities that even the greatest Jews don’t have. כ ל י ש ר אֵּל ב נֵּי מ ל כ ים הֵּם Every single Yid is a prince. You can look up to every Jew, and for good reason.

Some People Need to Work on Their Own Pride and Not Get So Impressed with Others

Remembering that we are 12 Shevotim needs constant Chazara (review)! Some people need to work on their own pride and not get so impressed with others. This is a real Yetzer Hara (unless it helps you, like: ק נ אַת סופ ר ים תַר בֶה ח כ מ ה jealousy of higher levels of Ruchaniyus, which causes you to grow). They need to constantly say to themselves: “Let those other Tzaddikim, Geonim, and: מ צוּי נ ים prodigies, and such lovely and popular people continue in their holy ways. But I, with my zero Kishronos (abilities) and Tzidkus and Ge’onus (genius) and decency, am super happy with myself!

I love my present situation, plus all my shortcomings and my few Maalos, more than all the greatness in all areas that I’m exposed to. I have no interest in all those Hespedim of so many giants in so many areas. They all can be a Yetzer Hara to distract me from MY TRUE MISSION IN LIFE; i.e., TO APPRECIATE EXACTLY THE WAY HASHEM MADE ME!

You’d be shocked if you knew how many unusually Chashuva people need to hear these words. These days, the Yetzer Hara of thinking you’re a zero (and/or your situation is the worst) is rampant, and the most surprising people can suffer even worse than those who think they’re on rock-bottom. “Envy is ignorance!”
