There is No Mitzvah to Harm The Wicked

The Way of Emunah | December 10, 2025

There is No Mitzvah to Harm The Wicked:
A man once came to the Sar Shalom of Belz zy”a and told him that he had owned a tavern in a certain village; however, another man had rented the rights to the tavern and he was left with no source of livelihood.
The Rebbe sent a message for the other man to come to him, and he asked him how he could take away another man’s parnassah.
The man answered, “I actually did a mitzvah. The old tavernkeeper kept the place open on Shabbos. He was a rasha and mechalel Shabbos. Therefore, it was a mitzvah to take it away from him.”
The Rebbe replied, “We see from the Torah that there is no mitzvah to do bad things to reshaim. Chazal say that when Klal Yisroel left Egypt, Hashem saw that they possessed no mitzvos. Therefore, he gave them the mitzvos of Pesach and milah. If you were correct that it is a mitzvah to hurt reshaim, it would be untrue that they possessed no mitzvos, as Chazal say that during Makkas Choshesh, the reshaim of Klal Yisroel died and the rest of the people buried them. Thus, they would have possessed the mitzvah of burying wicked people. We see from here that there is no mitzvah to bury reshaim. Instead, you should try to help them change their ways.)
