Avraham Avinu

Novardok weekly | December 08, 2025

We find that Lot (Rashi 13:8), Yitzchak Avinu (Rashi 25:2), and Eliezer (Bereishis Raba 60:7) all looked similar to Avraham Avinu. The Medrish (Shemos Raba 28:1) even brings down that when Moshe Rabbeinu went up to get the Torah, Hashem made him appear like Avraham, so that the malachim (angels) would respect him, for they had eaten by Avraham.

What is going on over here? Why does everybody look like Avraham? What is so great about him?

All religion of the world comes from Avraham. There is Yishmael, Esav, as well as the B'nei Keturah of the Far East (Avraham's children from Keturah), each one with their "beliefs", and each one with the point where they "go wrong." And, l'havdil elfei havdalos, you have us, the true heirs, B'nei Yisrael, the pure and loyal representatives of Hashem in this world. We are like Avraham himself, whom Hashem Himself appeared to, after his years of searching, seeking, and self-introspection. And you too can be a little "Avraham Avinu", through hisbonenus (self-introspection) and positive "soul-searching" for hidden talents and abilities (with a private rebbi).

Story:

A chasidishe yid once visited Rebbi Moshe Shapira z"l, to speak with him in learning. This yid knew the sefer Sfas Emes backwards and forwards. Rebbi Moshe remarked to him: "Why do you need me—you have already the Sfas Emes!" [who himself is known for giving deep clarity on all topics, and explaining concepts from within themselves, through hisbonenus and deep, positive thought] (from Looking into the Sun, by Rabbi Menachem Nissel shlit"a).

Question:

Dealing with people of different hashkafos and opinions.

Answer:

Keep away! Why are you looking for trouble?

That being said, I'll be m'gale (reveal) a deep secret: Underneath all the "philosophies", the guy often really wants one thing: More cholent! Most people don't really care much about anything one way or the other, and are rather just sitting in a constant state of pain (often subconsciously) for one reason or another (number one from not feeling Hashem's love for them, for no one ever taught them how). People are "power hungry", and are desperate for kavod, kavod, kavod (honor). There are so many out there that by them it is nebach mamash pikuach nefesh (sadly a matter of "life and death") for them to get that kibud (honor), whatever it may be. So be an "Avraham Avinu", and give food (or whatever works)!
