Emunah Turns Everything Around

However, he wasn't a yeshiva bachur, and he had never studied in yeshiva. Things progressed, and they were ready to get engaged, but the girl's brother protested that his sister should marry someone who studied in yeshiva.

The three of them went to the Chazon Ish, and they explained the situation. The Chazon Ish agreed with the brother. "It is proper that a girl from a Bais Yaakov school marry a yeshiva bachur."

They left the Chazon Ish's home and went to the bus stop. As they waited for a bus, a shaliach of the Chazon Ish came to them and said that the Chazon Ish is calling them back.

The Chazon Ish asked the brother, "What did the boy say when he left my house?" The brother replied that he said that apparently it wasn't bashert that they marry and that they must accept Hashem's will. The Chazon Ish replied, "As soon as you left my house, I had doubts. I thought that perhaps the shidduch should go ahead. And, indeed, I think that because of the emunah that this bachur has, he is a fitting shidduch for the Bais Yaakov girl, and they should finalize the shidduch."

Many stories are told about the Chazon Ish, but there aren't many stories of the Chazon Ish changing his mind. After he gave his opinion, it generally remained. Apparently, the emunah of this bachur had the strength to turn everything around and cause the Chazon Ish to change his mind.

The Shinover Rav zt'l said that when he was young, there was a mechanech who all the children were afraid of because he would hit the children if they didn't know the material. One day, he asked a boy to translate the pasuk (Bereishis 49:19) יגודנו גדוד גד. The child didn't know the translation of this pasuk, but he knew that he had to come up with something, so he translated it as follows: וואס גיט איז גיבט ט-ג, "Whatever G-d gives is good."

The melamed was very impressed by the child's clever response because it fits nicely into the words of the pasuk, so as his spanking tool was still in his hand, he ran to the beis medresh to tell the talmidei chachamim there the clever explanation of this student. Whatever Hashem gives is good.

This story is a cute example of how emunah turns everything around and makes things good. The child didn't even know exactly what he was saying, but he spoke words of emunah, and that turned everything around. The whip was still in the melamed’s hands, but he didn't use it to punish the child.

When we believe that even the hardships that we go through are for our good, this will also turn everything around, and things will become good for us.

Rabbeinu Yonah (Shaarei Teshuvah 4:12) teaches, "If troubles befall a sinner and he accepts them because he knows that he is guilty, and he accepts the afflictions with joy, this will protect him from far worse yesurim that would have come to him. This is as it states (Tehillim 76:11) תודך אדם חמת כי, 'For man's irritation will thank You...' This means we should praise Hashem for the struggles we go through because they protect us from far greater tzaros... Another pasuk is (Yeshayah 12:1) בי אנפת כי 'ה אודך, 'I praise You, Hashem, for You were wroth with me.' He praises Hashem for the tzaros he has because ותנחמני אפך ישב, because eventually, 'Your wrath will dissipate, and You will bring me comfort.'"

When one believes in Hashem, he will always be happy. There is no greater joy than to know that he is together with Hashem, and Hashem is watching him and caring for him.

It states (24:62) והוא ראי לחי באר מבוא בא ויצחק הנגב בארץ יושב, "Yitzchak was on his way, coming from Be'er Lachai Ro'i, and he dwelt in the land of the south." Rebbe Heno`ch of Alexander zt'l explains יצחק means joy. Where does happiness come from? The pasuk says, ראי לחי באר מבוא בא יצחק, joy comes when one sees Hashem. In every situation, when one knows it is from Hashem, his heart will always be filled with joy. The pasuk continues, הנגב בארץ יושב והוא, which indicates dryness in a spiritual sense when there is no sign of ruchniyos in his life. Even then, he can be happy with the emunah that Hashem is everywhere and even next to him.
