In the video showing Rav Moshe Feinstein putting on tefillin (Alim, Lech Lecha), an additional hanhagah can be seen. Rav Moshe wrapped the retzuos around his fingers without making the standard shin.
The day the video was released, I was at a wedding where Rav Reuven Feinstein was mesader kiddushin. I asked him if the video is reliable, and he said it certainly is. He explained that Rav Moshe had his own way of forming the shin on the tefillin shel yad. At the time of his bar mitzvah, he added, Rav Moshe taught him to bind it the classic way, and he does so until today, in deference to his father’s command. However, he teaches his own sons and grandsons to wrap their tefillin the way Rav Moshe did.
