Shemiras Einayim Protecting Our Eyes

Limuday Moshe | June 27, 2025

וישא עיניו וירא והנה גמלים באים
“He (Yitzchok lifted up his eyes, and behold camels were coming” (Bereishis 24:63)

What is the pasuk coming to teach us, by telling us that Yitzchok saw camels coming?

Perhaps we can suggest as follows: We find a similar pasuk by Rivkah, which says:ותשא רבקה את עיניה ותרא את יצחק – “Rivkah lifted up her eyes, and she saw Yitzchok”. However, there is a slight difference, when Yitzchok lifted up his eyes he saw camels, however, when Rivkah lifted up her eyes she saw Yitzchok. Seemingly, just like Rivkah when lifting up her eyes saw Yitzchok, when Yitzchok lifted up his eyes he should have seen Rivkah, how come the pasuk says he saw camels?

Perhaps the pasuk is coming to teach how careful Yitzchok was with shemiras einayim. He would always look down and be careful of what he saw, and even when he occasionally lifted up his eyes, he would make sure to look at the camel, and not the woman on top of it. Even when he was 40 years old, and was in the parsha of shidduchim, he was still very careful.
