Yitzchak and Yishmael
עַל פְּנֵי כָל אֶחָיו נָפָל
וְאֵלֶּה וֹתּלְדֹת יִצְחָק
This week’s parasha discusses the lives and legacies of Yitzchak and Yishmael. The Torah describes the descendants of Yitzchak, emphasizing his unique role among the Avos. The pasuk states that Yishmael "fell upon the face of all his brothers," highlighting the contrast between the two brothers and their respective destinies.
Chazal explain that while Yitzchak’s legacy is one of spiritual continuity and growth, Yishmael’s is marked by conflict and separation. The Torah’s careful wording teaches us about the different paths taken by the children of Avraham, and the importance of following the derech of Yitzchak in our own lives.
Lessons for Today
We learn from Yitzchak the value of perseverance in avodas Hashem, even when faced with challenges. Yishmael’s story serves as a reminder of the consequences of straying from the path of our forefathers. May we merit to follow in the footsteps of Yitzchak Avinu and bring nachas to our ancestors.
