The Mishnah states (Avos 4:2) that one should run to do a "mitzvah kala" (easy mitzvah). Rav Avrohom Azulai zt'l (the grandfather of the Chida) explains that one who wants to perfect himself must start with easy mitzvos so as not overextend himself. Once he gets used to doing easy mitzvos, it will be easier for him to do harder mitzvos. In this way, he can rise from one level to the next. Therefore, the Mishnah says to first run to an easy mitzvah, rather than starting with a hard mitzvah, and one will then be able to climb the ladder, step by step.
