For Hashem Spoke Good on Yisrael

The Chasam Sofer sheds light on a dialogue between Moshe and Yisro. When Yisro wished to leave the wilderness and return to his homeland, Moshe said (במדבר י כט): נֹסְעִים אֲנַחְנוּ אֶל־הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר אָמַר ה' אֹתוֹ... לְכָה אִתָּנוּ וְהֵטַבְנוּ לָךְ כִּי־ה' דִּבֶּר־טוֹב עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל - We are journeying to the place about which Hashem said; 'I will give it to you,' come along with us and we will treat you well, for Hashem spoke of bringing good [fortune] on Yisrael.

Yisro refused, and Moshe pleaded with him: אַל־נָא תַּעֲזֹב אֹתָנוּ... כִּי עַל־כֵּן יָדַעְתָּ חֲנֹתֵנוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר וְהָיִיתָ לָּנוּ לְעֵינָיִם: וְהָיָה כִּי־תֵלֵךְ עִמָּנוּ וְהָיָה הַטּוֹב הַהוּא אֲשֶׁר יֵיטִיב ה' עִמָּנוּ וְהֵטַבְנוּ לָךְ - Do not leave us, for you know how we camp in the wilderness, and you will be eyes (a guide) for us. So, if you come with us, we will extend to you the same bounty that Hashem grants us. The Ramban explains that Moshe was speaking practically - Yisro knew the terrain, the paths, and the dangers.

The Chasam Sofer explains that a man who declines another's generosity sometimes does so out of concern - perhaps the gift will strain the giver, perhaps the hospitality cannot truly sustain him. Moshe anticipated this scruple and addressed it directly: "Do not worry. כִּי־ה' דִּבֶּר־טוֹב - Hashem has spoken good over Yisrael." There is no shortage. There is no limit to His blessing. Come, and you will lack nothing. (חתם סופר פר' בהעלותך ד"ה לכה)

This declaration - כִּי־ה' דִּבֶּר־טוֹב עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל - reverberates far beyond that exchange in the desert. From that moment until the coming of Moshiach, it remains true. Every journey Klal Yisrael has travelled, every era of darkness and displacement, has unfolded beneath the arc of that promise. Hashem has spoken good over us. The exile, the wandering, the suffering - all of it is the journey of the King's child, carried lovingly toward complete healing. The destination is certain. The kindness is unending.
