Hashem Wants More Praise and Thankfulness, and Less Kvetching

Our Chachomim say: כ ִל ִה ִרוִֹףד ִא ח רכ ִה ִִבוֹדִִכ ִה ִבוֹד ִבמִֶמ ִִח ִר ִוֹנוּ (One who chases after Kavod, Kavod runs away from him). The same thing is true with your: ב ִש ִח ִוּב ק ש ה (praising Hashem vs. making requests form Him) ratio. When you keep davening and asking for something (although doing so is sometimes well worth it, and in the end you will get what you’re asking for, since: ה ע ק ש ןִִי צ ל יח ִ one who is stubborn will be Matzliach!) yet it can boomerang Chas V'shalom, since Hashem wants you to appreciate what you already have.

Imagine if the more you keep davening, the more Hashem views you as a basically ungrateful person. (Again, this isn’t always true, since Hashem is so full of Rachamim that He will help you regardless of whether you deserve it or not). If you went the exact opposite direction, and just “thanked” all day, you’d go much further.

I know of two cases where people got nowhere, despite all their Tefilos and: כ ִב ִיוֹתִ tears, and despite the fact that Chazal say: ש עֲ ר יִד מ עוֹתִל ֹאִנ נ ע לוִִּב"מִנטִא the Heavenly gates of tears are never sealed! Perhaps basic decency (thankfulness) is way more Chashuv in Shamayim than any Chazal. And thankfulness is an emergency issue for many, many of us, including people who think they are already thankful.

The Poskim in Shulchan Aruch say that you’re not even allowed to be Dan the Meraglim L'kaf Zechus. Kvetching and ingratitude are downright dangerous. Throughout your life, you have to constantly make a daily Bedikas Chametz to weed out all those unending complaints against ourselves (albeit our sins) and against our fate.

In truth, a person should spend even an hour a day with non-stop Thank You’s. You’ll see what a new Mazal you’ll have, and how you’ll attract more and more goodness in your life.
