The Difference Between the Revealed and Inner Dimensions of Torah

הפצת המיינות חוצה | June 25, 2025

The difference between the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner dimension of Torah is similar to the difference between ‘snow’ and ‘wool’ even though both symbolise levels that transcend the ‘Seder Hishtalshelus’. Nevertheless there is a fundamental difference between them; in that ‘snow’ (symbolising mercy) contains an (amalgamated) element of ‘judgement’ whereas ‘wool’ (symbolising kindness) has no judgement therein at all. This is because the inner dimension of Torah exists on a lofty level beyond the Seder Hishtalshelus and has no boundaries whatsoever.

Thus, because it [the inner dimension of Torah] is so lofty it is [able to be] drawn down [from above to far down below] to make a difference in the lowest realms, even to have an influence on someone whose spiritual level is so very low, as is alluded to in the concealed rebuke (that is rooted in the inner dimension and concealed aspect of Torah) that it is also reprimanding for the worst of transgressions [as the Possuk states:] דִי זָהָב “Di Zohov” taking an opposing position and violating the first two of the ‘Ten commandments’ אָנֹכִי ה׳ אֱלֹקֶּיךָ “I am HaShem, your G-d” and לֹא יִהְּיֶּה לְּךָ “You shall not have the gods of others”. In other words it [the concealed rebuke] even has an effect on someone who has stumbled on this transgression (May G-d help us) so that even he can have the opportunity to transform the darkness into light.

Accordingly we can explain why one of the allusions of the concealed rebuke (that is rooted in the [esoteric] inner dimension of Torah as explained above) is וּבֵין תֹפֶּל וְּלָבָן “between ... Tofel and Lovon” [as Rashi states] “because they complained (תָפְּלוּ) about the Manna, which was white (לָבָן )” for seemingly that which they complained about the Manna has nothing to do with the fact that it was white!
