In the Gemara
When the Yidden returned from בבל and built the 2nd בית המקדש, there was not enough wood for the fire on the מזבח.
A number of families stepped forward and contributed wood when it was needed. In appreciation for this special deed, the day on which they brought the wood became a יום טוב for that family, and every year they would come to the בית המקדש on that day, and bring a “קרבן עצים”, and their wood would be used on the מזבח, even though in later years there was already enough wood in the בית המקדש.
Knowing that sometimes this date would fall out on a שבת, they agreed that in that case they would celebrate and bring their קרבן the next day, on Sunday.
Question
If their special day came out on שבת, why would they push it off and bring it on Sunday, rather than do it earlier, and bring it on Friday?
Answer
There were a few families that brought wood, and the original gift and the annual celebration of each family lasted until it was time for another family to bring theirs. If the new family would bring their wood and celebrate early, that would be cutting into the time of the previous family. Since שלום is so important, the new family would push off their celebration until after שבת, rather than interfere with the other family’s special time.
