Reb Yitzchak Beirach Daskal

Once Upon a Chossid | December 10, 2025

From the book Marmarosh (p. 136):

“Reb Shmarya Daskal, who was one of the first settlers in the town, had many descendants. One of them was Reb Yitzchak Beirach Daskal.”

I heard about him from his youngest daughter, Mrs. Sosha Malka Tobel:

“He was born to Reb Leib Hirsch around the year 5615/1855, and was a Torah scholar. Like his grandfather, Reb Shmarya, he had a significant influence on the residents of Massif.

“He was very close to the Imrei Baruch, and after the Rebbe’s passing, he traveled regularly to the Ahavas Yisrael and to his brother, the Rebbe of Antiniya. He wore chassidic garb all his life, and never left his home without a long suit and a hat.”

“You have no idea who your grandfather was,” Rabbi Pinchas Horowitz, the son of Harav Mordechai Aryeh Horowitz, Rav of Banila, remarked to the family. “Every time Reb Yitzchak Beirach Daskal came to Vizhnitz, he traveled to my saintly father in Banila, near Vizhnitz, and he gave large sums of money to support the yeshivah there. We knew that Reb Yitzchak Beirach’s heart and pocket were always open. You can’t find too many people like that today!”

His grandson, Reb Yitzchak Beirach Daskal, heard from his father, Reb Shmuel:

Reb Yitzchak Beirach Daskal was scrupulous in his mitzvah observance. He was a talented person, and he used his abilities to help the townspeople. Although he never studied law, he served as the unofficial village advisor on all legal matters. Many Yidden came to consult him regarding their court cases, and sometimes they asked him to be present in court to help them.

He did this to such an extent that once, a judge lost patience with his intensive assistance, and berated him, “You’re not a licensed lawyer; you’re not allowed to participate in this trial!”

He was blessed by the Antiniya Rebbe with wealth, and he had a generous parnassah. He owned many assets, mainly valuable properties, some of which contained wells.

Decades later, his family visited Massif and the elderly residents of the town showed them the land that had previously belonged to Reb Yitzchak Beirach.
