The following story (related in Sefer Otzar Efraim in the name of the Imrei Chaim of Vizhnitz zy”a) teaches us that tzadikim also would transfer money from gentiles to Jews:
After the petirah of his grandfather, the Ahavas Shalom zy”a, a man came to his son, the Toras Chaim zy”a, and said that his daughter was engaged to be married but he had no money for the wedding expenses. He explained that when his older daughters got married, he went to the Ahavas Shalom, who gave him money for the expenses. Therefore, he was coming this time to his son and successor and asking him for help.
The Toras Chaim told him, “I don’t money for this but the Cossacks have money.”
The man was disappointed that the Rebbe wasn’t offering him anything. He went home and told his wife what the Rebbe and they both were very upset.
That night at midnight, they heard a knock at the door. When they opened the door, they saw a Cossack standing there. He told them that he had suddenly been called up to the army and he didn’t know where to safeguard his fortune. He said that he had a lot money but no one he could trust with it. He had heard that Jewish people were trustworthy, so he came to a Jewish home to ask if they could watch his money until he returned.
The man accepted to watch the money. After the Cossack left, he and his wife contemplated what had occurred. They realized it could not have been a coincidence that a Cossack appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the night and handed them a small fortune. It must be the fulfillment of the tzadik’s blessing.
In the morning, he went to see the Toras Chaim to tell him what happened. As soon as he walked through the door, the Rebbe said, “It never happened! There never was any Cossack! The money is yours to use as you like!”
