A Cause Too Vital to Abandon

Rebbe Responsa | June 27, 2025

Donation directed to Jewish education in North Africa; concern over husband’s recent withdrawal from communal involvement; continuing this work brings your family happiness.

Mrs. ...
Brocho v’Sholom:

I have duly received your letter of Aug. 21st, enclosing donation from your sister... Owing to great pressure of work, my acknowledgment has been regrettably delayed.

As the check was not specified for any particular cause, I turned it over for our educational program in North Africa, where every dollar goes a long way in our efforts to save the Jewish children from ignorance and assimilation, by providing for them a whole network of educational institutions.

I am sure that participation in this holy work, initiated by my father-in-law of sainted memory, will bring you all much happiness.

I was pleased to hear that your son-in-law has received a rabbinical post. I would be pleased to hear how the newly married couple are getting on.

I want to take this opportunity to call your attention to something which has been bothering me lately. For, as you know, your husband has been very active in all Lubavitcher matters in your community until recently. Lately, however, whenever I inquire after the state of affairs in ..., and especially with regard to your husband's participation and leadership, I get reluctant and inadequate replies — or none at all, which makes me think that all is not as it should be. If this is so, it is a great loss both for the cause and for your husband. I hesitate to write to him, as I do not know the circumstances, nor is it easy for me to take the initiative in such a case. But since you refer to my interest in your family, I mention this, because I believe that participation in the work which my father-in-law of sainted memory had begun means very much to the happiness of all of you. I trust you will use your influence that your husband resume his participation and leadership in behalf of the Lubavitcher Yeshivah in... and Lubavitcher interests in general.

With the blessings of Kesivo vaChasimo tovo to you, your husband, daughter and son-in-law, and to your sister in particular,

Cordially,
M. Schneerson
