Curling Peyos on Shabbos

36. The Mishnoh in Shabbos (צ"ד: ) states that one may not make a ‘godeles’ in hair on Shabbos. The Rishonim argue whether this means braiding or any manner of fixing up hair to sit properly and nicely. It is ossur since it resembles building

37. Tight curl. Based on this, some Acharonim forbid curling peyos in a beautiful and professional manner since it resembles building

38. However, some poskim allow curling peyos on Shabbos, as only braiding resembles building

39. Loose curl. All agree one may twist his peyos a little in a loose, light manner so that they are not unkempt. Also, one whose peyos are already naturally curly may curl them a bit more to keep them in place

40. Coiled peyos. Some people coil their peyos and place them over or next to their ears. This would seem to get into the above machlokes. However, it would seem that if one would do it loosely, just to organize his peyos without being meticulous [unlike those who make elaborate twists using different parts of the peyos], he would be allowed to wind them on Shabbos and all agree it is not a professional act.

41. However, one must be very careful not to pull his peyos too hard since that would be cause for concern that he may pull out hairs on Shabbos, which is ossur as a toldoh of gozeiz It is ossur when done in a way that it is a psik reisho that hair will come out (מ"ב סי' ש"ג סקפ"ו ).

42. Easily pulled out. One whose hair is very weak and comes off at a slight touch may not touch his hair on Shabbos whatsoever since it is a psik reisho that some will come out

Combing with a Comb

43. One may not use a comb on his hair on Shabbos (שו"ע סי' ש"ג סכ"ז ) since it is almost certain that he will pull out hair (מ"ב שם סקפ"ו). Every rov should caution the people in his town about this Therefore, one may not arrange his peyos with a comb on Shabbos.

44. Even if there is no concern of pulling out hairs whatsoever, one may not use a comb on Shabbos since it is uvdo dechol. Accordingly, combs are muktzeh and may not be moved at all

Gel or Sugar Water

45. One may not use gel or sugar water to style his peyos on Shabbos (ע"פ ביאה"ל ס"ס ש"ג ).

Arranging Peyos After Teviloh

46. One who tovels in a mikvoh on Shabbos must make sure not to do sechitoh on his hair, which is ossur miderabonon Therefore, while his peyos are still fairly wet [wet enough to get something else wet], he should not roll or tie them tightly if it is a psik reisho that water will come out. If they are only slightly damp, it is muttar

47. Therefore, after toveling, one should wait until his peyos are not very wet before arranging them. He can also place a towel on them without pressing it to get off the excess water and then, when they are merely damp, he may arrange them loosely. He may also shake the water of the hairs without squeezing them

48. Arranging the peyos in the water. One may arrange his peyos while they are still in the water since there is no issur sechitoh underwater
