The Hadas has no taste; it only smells Gevaldig. And this is a big Ma'ala, since “smelling” symbolizes מ ַעֲַשִַיםַטוֹבִַים good deeds. The Lulav has only taste, which symbolizes learning Torah. Everything has its own Ma'ala. Sometimes we say: וְלֹּאַ ה מִדְ ר שַהוּאַה עִק ר,ַאֶל אַה מ עֲשֶהַַאבותַאַיז the main thing is not the learning, rather actions; and sometimes we say: וְת לְמוּדַ תוֹר הַ כְנֶגֶדַ כֻל ם learning Torah is equal to all the other Mitzvos together. The important thing is that each person (and each group of Klal Yisroel) should always appreciate what he is good at most.
The Arvei Nachal are plenty Chashuv, since they symbolize having “zero”, which is Mach'nia (humbles) a person. Also, the same person has different times in his life. Sometimes he's doing great, like an Esrog with all the Maalos. Sometimes he's only into learning, and not “doing” much. Other times he's into doing Mitzvos, and not learning Torah.
