Honoring the Kohen During Krias HaTorah

Menucha Magazine | June 27, 2025

[The Torah in this week’s parsha teaches that we need to accord honor to kohanim, as the verse says regarding a kohen,קָדֹש יִהְיֶה לָּךְ - he should be holy for you (Vayikra 21:8). Rashi explains it in the following way:נהוג בו קדושה לפתוח ראשון בכל דבר ולברך ראשון בסעודה (Treat a kohen with sanctity - i.e., to let him be the first one to initiate in everything and to be the first one to bless at a meal. That’s why, for example, a kohen gets the 1st aliya.)]

During Krias HaTorah, Gavriel, the gabbai came over to Chaim and said, “I want to give you an aliya now, but unfortunately, I forgot two things about you: I forgot your name and I forgot who in our shul is your father. Now, if your father is Reb Binyamin Cohen, then tell me your name. If not, then don’t tell me your name, and you just go up to the Torah for your aliya.”

Why did Gavriel say it like that?
