Teshuvah, Crying, and the Descent of the Soul

The Need for Crying in Teshuvah

Beis. The Rebbe Maharash continues in his Maamor that in order for a person to arouse the great mercies from above through ‘Teshuvah’ there needs to be some ‘crying’ as the Possuk states regarding the redemption in the future: בִבְּכִי יָבֹאוּ “With Weeping they will come”. This also refers to the complete Tzaddikim, and most certainly when a person knows where he is standing in his heart, that he needs, really, to cry from a feeling of regret for the mistakes of the past.

This is analogous to one who whilst bathing in the river starts to drown and regrets going there to bathe. [It seems that this must be the origin of the story of the gentile from Vitebsk that started to drown and regretted bathing there etc].

The Descent into the World and Mayim Rabim

Similarly, in the analogue this is the matter of the Neshomoh descending into the body in this lowly world into the ‘Mayim Rabim’ which alludes to the difficulties of earning a living. It is known that this aspect of earning a living and worrying about not having enough bread is the beginning of a person’s whole spiritual descent etc... It is about this that there needs to be a ‘Teshuvah’ and regret to the extent of crying.

This also explains the meaning of the words in Tehilim עֹבְּרֵי בְּעֵמֶק הַבָכָא מַעְּיָן יְּשִיתוּהוּ “Transgressors in the valley of weeping make it into a fountain” and the Sages of blessed memory of the Talmud say that עֹבְּרֵי refers to those who transgress the will of HaShem. עֵמֶק means they deepen Gehinom for them. הַבָכָא means that they...
