In the Parsha:

משה רבינו told the Yidden:

  1. Hashem will set you apart from all the other nations, to be his ___________ nation, just as He spoke.
  2. You will be a holy nation, just as He spoke.

When had Hashem spoken these words?
רש"י explains that Hashem had told בני ישראל that they would be His treasured nation in יתרו פרשת. And He told them about being a holy nation at the end of קדושים פרשת.

Question:

In פרשת יתרו, after saying that בני ישראל would be סגולה, a treasured nation, Hashem also told them that they would be קדוש גוי, a holy _______.
Since רש"י says that the 1st פסוק is referring to פרשת יתרו, why does he say that the 2nd פסוק is referring to the end of פרשת קדושים, instead of referencing both things to פרשת יתרו?

Answer:

The 1st פסוק says that you will be Hashem’s treasured nation כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶׁר לָךְ, as He spoke about you. So רש"י says that it is from פרשת יתרו, where Hashem is ______________ that the Yidden will be his treasure. (Regardless of their own personal behavior).

The 2nd פסוק says that you will be a holy nation כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֵּר, as He spoke to you. This means that Hashem had said something to them, as a __________. Therefore, רש"י says that it is from the end of פרשת קדושים, where Hashem is instructing the Yidden to be holy.

Further discussion:

  • There are earlier commands to be holy. Why does רש"י refer to this specific פסוק? (See אות ו in the שיחה)

סְגֻלָה פרק יט פסוק ה: וִהְיִיתֶם לִי

פרק כ פסוק כו: וִהְיִיתֶם לִי קְדֹשִים

See רש"י on פרק כח פסוק טו, in פרשת ויצא
