The Five Arguments Against the Yetzer Hara

Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh | June 27, 2025

The five arguments against the Yetzer Hara.

The Ohr Hachaim offers another explanation to how Hashem rescues a person from the evil inclination and the nonsense of this world, allowing him to live a life of Torah and worship of Hashem. Five things are mentioned, corresponding to the five books of the Torah.

בְיָד חֲזָקָה – with a mighty hand – alludes to the first one of the five books of the Torah, Sefer Bereishis. Hashem’s strong hand created a world filled with mighty powers and intricate details.

וּבִזְרֹעַ נְטוּיָה - with an outstretched arm – alludes to Sefer Shmos. Hashem revealed His strong arm and powers by removing us from Mitzrayim, making miracles at the yam suf, and the great scene of the giving of the Torah. These are all expressions of Hashem’s outstretched arm.

וּבְמֹרָא גָדֹל - with great fear – alludes to the third book of the Torah, Sefer Vayikra. This Sefer discusses the service of Hashem that was performed in the Beis Hamikdash. They were commanded to treat the Beis Hamikdash with great fear, and when the Beis Hamikdash was consecrated, it was done so with the lives of two great leaders of Klal Yisroel – Nadav and Avihu. This brought great fear of Heaven into Klal Yisroel.

וּבְאֹתוֹת - with signs – refers to the fourth book, which is Sefer Bamidbar. The possuk describes how Klal Yisroel traveled through the desert (Bamidbar 2:2) אִיש עַל דִגְלוֹ בְאֹתוֹת - The Children of Israel shall encamp every man by his own standard with signs. The signs are alluded to by this possuk.

וּבְמֹפְתִים - and with wonders and proofs. This is an allusion to the fifth book of the Torah, which is Sefer Devarim. Moshe spoke to the entire nation and rebuked them with proofs for that which they diverted from the way of Hashem, and the great good that Hashem did for them. He rebuked them by telling them that they had not received the punishment that they deserved and He had treated them with compassion and kindness. This Sefer also teaches us the wonders a Navi must bring in order to be believed.

The five books of the Torah are what helps us fight the Yetzer Hara and win.
