With this, we can understand why the main mitzvah of Rosh Hashanah is blowing the shofar. As we explained previously, due to our improper thoughts and speech throughout the entire year, we find ourselves in a spiritual place on Rosh Hashanah that is an aspect of an animal that can’t speak or think clearly. Therefore, in order to awaken Hashem’s compassion, we need to call out to Him with the shofar, which comes from the head of an animal that isn’t able to talk. In other words, we have to cry out to Hashem without any words in order to arouse Hashem to help us regain our true awareness and ability to speak in a holy way.
Then, Hashem indeed answers our calls, and, after we hear the shofar during Mussaf on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, we reach a higher level of seichel and it is permitted to speak about material matters, since we now have a greater ability to elevate the goodness of these expressions.
