Phenomenon of Increase in Pamphlets
1. In the last few decades, a major revolution has taken place with the spread of Shabbos pamphlets. Until about forty years ago, people studied sefarim to learn Torah. When they learned Shas, they used a Gemara; when they learned halacha, they used a Shulchan Aruch with its commentaries and toiled to learn from it; when they wanted to learn sefarim on Chumash, they took the sefer or commentary of their choice and learned it. In this way, they acquired the knowledge and hashkafa of the Torah according to our rabbanim, from sefarim. Through toil and hard work, the Torah was etched into a person’s head and memory, so that when he later thought about some portion of Torah and wanted to review it, he had the sefer in his hands to search and find what he remembered.
2. Today, we live in a world that wants quick, effortless answers to everything. It is the world of disposables, the generation of fast food. Thus, many people want the Torah to be laid out for them in the beis medrash without searching in sefarim, without troubling themselves to take a sefer off the shelf. They want it prepared for them on the tables of the beis medrash, spread before them like a set table. Then they are ready to learn from the page in front of them easily and without too much work.
3. To this aim, the phenomenon of spreading Torah via weekly papers arose. Since the inception of the idea to write a weekly paper on the parsha and distribute it in shuls, the idea has increased exponentially, to the point that today there are over 800 different publications and periodicals containing an array of topics, including the weekly parsha, halacha, hashkafa, Chassidus, Litvish thought, stories of tzaddikim, chizuk in emuna and bitachon, biographies of tzaddikim, current topics, Jewish content for children, and more. These are publicized every week throughout the world.
4. There are many things in the world with many fine qualities and advantages, while also having an element of downsides. Here, too, on the topic of Shabbos papers, there are many pros, and at the same time, some cons, as we will describe. However, the fact is that Shabbos papers are a reality. They are here to stay and accompany us for a long time, and we do not have the ability to stop the phenomenon. We can only learn to deal with it, improve it, and live with it and its implications in the most effective way.
5. Thus, we will now strive to set forth before the reader the pros and cons. At the same time, we will find relevant halachos and ways to minimize the harm. We hope to find solutions to the downsides so that the gains will outweigh the losses.
