5749 - 1989, months before winning the New York City mayoral election, Mr. David Dinkins came to meet the Rebbe. The Rebbe expressed his hope that the many nationalities in New York would live together in harmony, with each one influencing its neighbors to perform additional acts of charity. He added that he looked forward to a time when the city’s melting pot would be so active that it would no longer be necessary to emphasize the various ethnicities, “because they are no different. All of them are created by the same G d, and created for the same purpose: to add all good things around them.”
