Moshe requested a gift from Hakodosh Boruch Hu, as Moshe was the Mekor, the source, of Yiras Hashem. The Gemara in Brachos 33b says that to Moshe Rabbeinu, Yiras Hashem was a little thing, for he was so great in it. Shabbos is a time that great Yiras Shomayim come upon a person. Through Yiras Shomayim, one can be Mesaken the Chet Ha’eigel. If one heeds Shabbos properly, he is Zoche to Yiras Hashem, as this is what it says in Shabbos 10b that Hakodosh Boruch Hu has a gift in His treasure house; it is Yiras Shomayim. (The Gemara says that Shabbos is the gift, and Shabbos brings Yirah). The Lashon of the Gemara there is, “מתנה טובה בבית גנזי”. These words are the same Gematria as “יראת האלקים ”, which is also the same Gematria as, “שבת”. This is the Zemer we sing on Leil Shabbos, “ביום השבת שישו ושמחו כמקבלי מתן נחליאל” – that through Shabbos Kodesh we are Zoche to return to the Madreiga that we were on by Kabolas HaTorah, which was prior to the Chet Ha’eigel.
