Seeking Torah Is Life Itself

Bitachon Weekly | December 10, 2025

Moshe is always trying to become greater, despite his unbelievable greatness. When Dovid was running for his life to escape from Shaul, he said: צָמְּאָה לְּך נַפְּשִּ י כָמַהּ לְּך בְּשָרִּ י תהלים סג ב My thirst is only for more closeness to Hashem. How can a person think of such things while he’s running for his life?

A human is by nature a “seeker”. A person needs to never really feel satisfied, and he should always look to grow and improve. This is his very essence, as Chazal say: מַבְּעֶה זֶה אָדָם ב"ק ג ב the “Seeker”, this refers to Man; this is what life is all about. The Rambam says that if a student needs to go into exile (to the Arei Miklat, since he committed murder by mistake) his Rebbe must exile along with him, since we must provide him with “life”, and: חַ יֵּי בַ עֲ לֵּ י חָ כְּ מָ ה וּמ ב ק ש יה בְּ לֹ א תַ לְּ מוּד כְּ מִּ יתָ ה חַ שוּבִּ ין the life of a “seeker” without constant growth, is like “death”.

We see that seeking Torah is life itself. R' Boruch Ber Leibowitz Zatzal used to call Bnei Torah “M’vakshei Hashem”. When Dovid is seeking Hashem, even though he may be running for his life, he is alive and safe. A person without learning Torah is in trouble, Chas V'shalom. This is probably why Dovid HaMelech kept learning every Shabbos, so the Malach HaMo'ves shouldn’t kill him (Gemara) and the Gemara says that the Malach HaMo'ves couldn’t kill Rabba bar Nachmeini, because: לֹא הֲוָה קָא פָסִׂיק פּוּמֵיהּ מִׂגִׂרְ סֵיהּ ב"מ פו א he never stopped learning.
