ברכת הרי"ח - 32:12
“למה יאמרו מצרים לאמר ברעה הוציאם להרג אתם בהרים ולכלתם מעל פני האדמה, שוב מחרון אפך והנחם על הרעה לעמך” – “Why should Mitzrayim say the following: With evil intent did He take them out, to kill them in the mountains and to annihilate them from upon the face of the earth? Relent from Your burning anger and reconsider regarding the evil against Your nation.”
The Gemara in Shabbos 55a says that the main wickedness of Resha’im is that through their sins, they make that which is קודש, holy, into חול, mundane. The Gemara there says that Hakodosh Boruch Hu told Malach Gavriel to inscribe a ת' of ink on the foreheads of the righteous as a sign so that the angels of destruction will not have dominion over them, and inscribe a ת' of blood on the foreheads of the wicked as a sign that the angels of destruction will have dominion over them. The Tzaddikim are able to be Mesaken that damage caused by the Resha’im, and they change it into a Zechus. They accomplish this through toiling in the Torah Hakdosha that was given in forty days. The Ba’al Haturim says on the word, “תרומה” that it can be broken down to be, “תורה – מ'” – the Torah Hakdosha which was given in forty days. Thus, that which the Resha’im made חול the Tzaddikim add that מ' from the forty days of Torah, and turn חול into מחול – which turns the bad to good – as it will bring מחילה for their sins. This will also cause, as the Gemara in Ta’anis 31a says, that, “עתיד הקב"ה לעשות מחול לצדיקים ” – in the future Hakodosh Boruch Hu will arrange a “מחול” – a dance, for the Tzaddikim. When Klal Yisroel served the Eigel, they made קודש into חול and they said, “אלה אלקיך ישראל” – and Moshe Rabbeinu was Mispalel to Hakodosh Boruch Hu and said, “שוב מחרון אפיך והנחם על הרעה לעמך” – if you split the word, “והנחם ” to “והנח – מ'” – that Moshe was asking for the מ' to be placed on the רעה, which is חול. Thus, the מ' should be added to the חול to turn it into good.
