Our heart breaks for them, but it doesn’t need to...
It's hard to watch our kids struggle socially. Whether they're overly aggressive, overly passive or socially withdrawn, whether they behave in unskilled ways or behave just fine but find themselves routinely rejected for reasons beyond their control - whatever pain they're experiencing often becomes our pain. The truth is, however, that our greatest contribution to their journey lies in our ability to "hold" their pain, to acknowledge it without becoming immersed in it, to give them assistance without needing a certain outcome.
Everyone has challenges. Showing kids that we're not terrified for them or with them, strengthens them to meet life head on in all of its ups and downs.
