Brief cover letter from the Rebbe’s secretary submitting the Rebbe’s position on school prayer to House Judiciary Committee considering constitutional amendment.

Dear Congressman Celler:

In connection with the House Judiciary Committee hearings on the issue of prayer in the public schools, scheduled to begin on April 22, we are sending you herewith a copy of a letter by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, head of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s stand on this issue is, of course, representative of that followed by the numerous Chabad-Lubavitch congregations and followers in this country.

The letter was submitted to the hearings by senator Frank J. Becker (R-NY), the amendment’s sponsor and chief proponent.

Emanuel Celler (1888–1981) was a Democratic congressman from New York who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1923 to 1973, and as chair of the House Judiciary Committee from 1955 to 1973.
