Rav Elazar Shapira Yodei Binah

Author of Yodei Binah. Son of Rav Tzvi Elimelech of Dynow, author of Bnei Yissaschar. Born in the year 1808 (תקס"ח). Son-in-law of Rav Yehoshua Heschel of Dukla.

In his youth, Rav Elazar saw Rav Menachem Mendel of Rymanow. He received the tradition of chassidus from his father as well as from Rav Tzvi Hirsch of Zidatshuv, Rav Asher Yeshaya of Ropshitz, Rav Yisroel of Rizhin and Rav Tzvi Hirsch of Rymanow.

He served first as rav of Ribtitsh in תקפ"ט, as did his father before him. In the year תקצ"ח he became rav of Strizhov and afterwards as rav of Lanzhot.

In תר"א, he was appointed his father’s successor and he acquired many followers despite the fact that his brother Rav Dovid resided in Dynow, his father’s town.

He travelled to Vienna for medical care and he passed away there on the 12th of Elul, 1865 (תרכ"ה). After negotiations, permission was granted to move the body, and three days later he was buried in Lanzhot.

He left behind sons: Rav Shlomo Shapira of Munkacsz, Rav Tzvi Elimelech of Birtsh, Rav Simcha Shapira of Lanzhot, Rav Menachem Pinchos Shapira of Lanzhot.

His widow lived on for many years after him until Isru Chag Shavous of תרמ"ח.
