SIGNS NEEDED FOR RETURN OF A LOST ITEM

דברים פרק כב , ב עַּד ותֹא
ךיִחָא ׁשרְ ד
ב"מ כ"ח ב' וכי תעלה על דעתך שיתננו קודם שידרשנו אלא דרשהו אם רמאי הוא או אינו רמאי לאו
בסימנין שמע מינה סימנין דאורייתא

T.T. It is not clear how the Gemara derives from this verse that signs are needed and not witnesses. Baal HaTurim says the word אתו implies אות, a sign, like the verse regarding Tefillin, “it should be a sign for you”. Thus, the explanation of the verse is that the lost item should stay by the finder until the owner requests the lost item with “signs.” So explains the Zohar.
