מזמור שירו לד' שיר חדש – Mizmor shiru l’Hashem shir chadash.
A Psalm, sing to Hashem, a new song.

Midrash Tanchuma (Beshalach 10) explains this concept of a new song, as the last of the ten great songs of faith which highlight Jewish history. The Shiros in order of sequence are: 1) The song the Jews sang on the first night of Pesach when they were redeemed from Egypt; 2) Shiras Ha’Yam, the Az Yashir sung after the Red Sea split, saving the Jews and drowning the Egyptians; 3) The song dedicated to be’eirah, the well of Miriam; 4) Moshe Rabbeinu’s final song (Shiras Ha’azinu) before his death; 5) Yehoshua’s song following his victory; 6) Devorah’s (haShofetes) Song (Shiras Devorah) sung following her victory; 7) David Hamelech’s song, following his safe return from his enemies; 8) David’s Song for the Chanukas Bais Hamikdash (Tehillim 30); 9) Shlomo Hamelech’s Shir HaShirim, Song of Songs; 10) Tehillim 98, the Song of the Future.
