At the end of this week’s Torah portion, Ki Tetze, there is a warning to be careful with proper measures and weights: “You shall not keep in your pouch two different weights, one large and one small. You shall not keep in your house two different ephah measures, one large and one small.” (Devarim 25:13-14)
Following this, the command appears to remember what Amalek did to us. On the juxtaposition of these two commands, our Sages said: “For this sin, of keeping two types of weights, large and small... Amalek comes.”
The question arises: why is the prohibition of deceit in measures and weights considered so severe that it could cause Amalek to come? There are many other prohibitions in the Torah – why is this particular sin linked to Amalek, the worst of Israel’s enemies, whose end must be utter destruction?
