Troubles of a Person Are Caused by Lack of Learning

Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh | June 27, 2025

The Ohr Hachaim writes that the punishment for this person is first that he is to be punished. The Gemara (Berachos 5a) writes that if a person feels troubles and pain, he should realize that it is a result of his aveiros. If he has researched his life and found no aveiros at all, he should understand that this is a result of his not learning Torah. The obvious question asked by all is, how can he say that he did not find an aveira when his suffering is a result of his not learning Torah? Is not learning Torah itself not a sin? The answer is that a person’s obligation to learn Torah is endless, nobody is ever free from this obligation. The Mishna (Avos 2:16) says that even though nobody can learn the entire Torah, nobody is ever considered freed from this obligation. Even if a person thinks that he has learned enough and does not see his free time as a sin, in truth he should know that it is the cause of his suffering. He did not fully appreciate and internalize his obligation to Hashem with regard to learning His Torah, and that is why he is currently suffering.

He is then punished with 100 silver coins. The Ohr Hachaim says that this is based on the possuk (Devarim 10:12) וְעַּתָּה יִ שְרָאֵל מָה ה' א לוקיךָ שֹאֵל מֵעִמָךְ – Now, Yisroel, what does Hashem your G-d want from you. Chazal tell us that the word וְעַּתָּׁה refers to teshuva. When a person does teshuva, he needs to be careful with the 100 brachos that he must say daily. This is another repair for his aveira.
