In our parashah, we learn about the case of the המאורסה נערה who’s put to death צעקה לא אשר דבר על, because she was in the city and could have cried out for help (Devarim 22:24). Says the Rebbe Rav Bunim of Peshischa, “The most important complaint against a person who didn’t succeed spiritually is why didn’t you cry out?! Why didn’t you cry and daven until you received the light and the wisdom to find your place in Torah?”
This is a twofold complaint: 1) Why did you ruin your own life, and 2) Why did you turn against the Torah and accuse it of not delivering the promises of blessings? You should have understood that there is a path for you—even if you haven’t found it yet—and done everything in your power, through tefillah and hard work, to find it.
