A Light Unto the Nations

Ilanna Benyaminson

As we were packing our Shabbos groceries into an Uber, someone (not Jewish) came up to the driver and asked for money. She was busy helping us and was behind on her bills, so at first she didn’t want to give to him. Then she heard that he needed water, and she had a water bottle in her car so she gave it to him. As we started driving, my kids urged me to ask the driver if she is Jewish. She said she isn’t Jewish, and my kids gave me one of our Seven Commandments cards to give to her. She started talking about how she felt bad that she hadn’t wanted to give the person money, but she doesn’t have so much herself and recently a lot of people have been coming up and asking her for money. I told her that in our Jewish books it says that if you can’t give a lot, you can give at least a little something, and even just say a good word to make them feel good. She said that she had actually had an idea to split some money into quarters, so she would always have something to give. She said that now that we talked about this, she would do it right after she drops us off. I told her about the Messiah, the Lubavitcher Rebbe King Moshiach Shlita, whose picture is on the Seven Commandments card, and about how his majesty sends people around the world to teach Judaism to Jews and to help all people. She said that she actually sees a big Chabad building often. At the end of the ride she thanked us.
