Lech Lecha | Selfless Kindness and the Value of Tzedakah

Illuminating teachings and insights on the weekly Parsha of Rabbi Yoram Michael Abargel Zt”l. From the weekly lessons of his son Rabbi Yisrael Abargel Shlita.

In Parshat Lech Lecha, we learn about the selfless kindness of Avraham Avinu. His acts of chesed were not limited to his family or those close to him, but extended to all people, regardless of their background or status. Avraham’s tent was open on all four sides, symbolizing his readiness to welcome guests from every direction. This openness teaches us the importance of being available to help others at all times.

One of the central themes of this parsha is the value of tzedakah (charity). Avraham’s life was a testament to the power of giving. He understood that wealth is a tool to be used for the benefit of others, not just for personal gain. The Torah emphasizes that true greatness is achieved through acts of kindness and generosity.

The Test of Wealth

Avraham was tested with wealth, and he passed by using his resources to support those in need. He did not allow his possessions to define him; instead, he defined himself through his actions. This is a lesson for all of us: material blessings are an opportunity to elevate ourselves and bring light into the world.

Welcoming Guests

The mitzvah of hachnasat orchim (welcoming guests) is highlighted in Avraham’s story. He went out of his way to provide food, shelter, and comfort to travelers. Even when he was recovering from his brit milah, he eagerly sought out guests to serve. This level of dedication shows us the importance of prioritizing the needs of others, even when it is inconvenient or difficult.

The Power of Giving

Giving tzedakah is not just about helping others; it also refines our own character. When we give, we become more compassionate and connected to those around us. The act of giving creates a bond between the giver and the recipient, fostering unity and love within the community.

Avraham’s example teaches us that every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the potential to change the world. By following in his footsteps, we can bring blessing and peace to ourselves and to others.

May we all strive to emulate Avraham’s selfless kindness and recognize the true value of tzedakah in our lives.
