3. A bris is not given to an infant or any other person who is sick (שו''ע יו''ד סי' רס''ב ס''ב ). Great care must be taken not to give a bris to an infant who is potentially sick, as risk to life overrides everything. An infant can get a bris after some time, but a Jewish life lost can never be restored (שו''ע שם סי' רס''ג ס''א ).

4. Thus, if there is any possible element of illness or ailment, the parents should ask a doctor if the infant can get a bris (ערוך השלחן סוף סי' רס''ב ). Then, they should ask a mohel familiar with the halachos and a posek whether the infant may get a bris as usual (קיצור שו''ע סי' קס''ג ס''ג ) or whether it must be postponed until he recovers, as well as whether this illness requires waiting seven full days after recovery, as we will discuss below.
