The Spiritual Significance of Leaving One's Land

Ba'er Heitev | December 08, 2025

Hashem said to Avrom, "Go for yourself from your land, from your relatives, and from your father's house to the land that I will show you. Etc." (12:1)

Many Meforshim ZY”A dwell upon the repetition of the steps in this Possuk. The Skulener Rebbe ZY”A would say in his Droshoh to Chasanim, the words of the Kedushas Levi of Berditchev ZY”A, as follows.

Asks the Berditchever, why are the nations of the world called “Goyei Ho’arotzos – the Nations of the land? The reason is, since a Frenchman is associated with France, an Englishman with England, etc. In contrast to Yidden who have The Torah and Mitzvos. Eretz Yisroel is given to us to achieve spiritual heights, to observe the Torah and Mitzvos of Eretz Yisroel.

Rav Moshe Feinstein ZY”A says, that therefore, Shabbos Hagodol is observed on Shabbos and not on the tenth of Nisson. As the tenth of Nisson was the day Klall Yisroel went over the Yarden into Eretz Yisroel and if we would symbolize that day, we will mistaken it for a nationalistic event, and it is not so.

To expound on this further there is a grape vineyard area known as Bordeaux. The farmers go out each day to work with boots due to the mud. When they return at the end of the day, the boots are scraped for any soil attached to it, due to its value. That is truly an attachment to the land.

We are now in Golus (exile) and are loyal and respect our host Nations. Thus, we yearn for the day of a full Ruchniyus (spiritual) atmosphere in which we will attain the level of a Geuloh Shleimoh and Hashro’as HaShchinoh, with the third Beis HaMikdosh in Yerusholayim Ir HaKodesh.

We therefore must aspire to raise ourselves from our land, our birthplace, and follow the instructions of Hashem, to ultimately be Zoche (merit) to Eretz Yisroel.
